Title:                         Research Fellow, Defense Analysis

Reports to:             Director, Allison Center for National Security

Job Summary:          The Research Fellow, Defense Analysis engages in advanced research, publication, and education programs related to Defense Analysis and Military Strength. The Research Fellow is responsible for editing and producing the Index of U.S. Military Strength and creating a high-profile and national reputation for The Heritage Foundation in their policy field. The Research Fellow is expected to be of high professional caliber, capable of conducting research and analysis that advances Heritage’s agenda and acting appropriately as a spokesman for Heritage in public events. The ideal candidate clearly demonstrates impact over time and performs at a level recognized to be unique, authoritative, and persuasive. This position also serves on research teams with lead responsibility for the areas in the Defense domain.

Job Duties:

• Serve as lead Editor for the Index of U.S. Military Strength, a flagship Heritage publication.
• Conduct advanced policy analysis and scholarly research.
• Research and write high quality papers, reports, book chapters, and commentary.
• Speak at major public functions and professional conferences.
• Work with other staff to enhance research and refine proposals into affirmative public policy positions.
• Play an active role with the media and in the public policy community.
• Represent Heritage in major professional forums and settings, including conferences, congressional hearings and public speaking.
• Organize major public and private events and meetings.

Qualifications:

Education:                   PhD or the acquisition of equivalent level of technical and research skills

Experience:                 10+ years of experience in the public policy field; strong body of public policy publications, including several scholarly or professional publications; service in the Armed Forces and defense programming, policy, and budget is a plus

Communications:        Accomplished writer and influential public speaker; able to communicate policy positions in multiple media

Technology:                Microsoft Suite

The salary range for this role is $130,000 - $180,000 annually. This range is a good-faith estimate, and the final salary offered to a selected candidate depends on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, and other qualifications; internal and external market pay for comparable jobs; and level of hire based on aforementioned qualifications.
